The Cacao Swollen Shoot Virus (CSSV) is spreading rapidly, threatening not only cocoa production in West Africa but also the stability of the global chocolate supply chain. Since approximately 50% of the world’s cocoa is sourced from Ghana and Ivory Coast, these developments have direct consequences for the entire supply chain—from small-scale producers to large-scale buyers who import cocoa in bulk.

The Devastating Impact of the Virus in West Africa
The Cacao Swollen Shoot Virus (CSSV) is one of the most severe threats to cocoa trees in Ghana, where it has already caused crop losses ranging from 15% to 50%. This virus has been known in West Africa since the 1930s and remains endemic to the region, predominantly affecting Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Nigeria. The virus is transmitted by mealybugs, tiny insects that feed on the leaves, buds, and flowers of cocoa trees. Over the years, more than 254 million cocoa trees have been destroyed in Ghana alone due to the disease, significantly affecting both crop yields and the livelihoods of farmers.

In the last two decades, the virus has been particularly damaging, contributing to a 15% loss of the world’s total cocoa production. The economic impact on local farmers is devastating, as their livelihoods are directly tied to cocoa yields.
Conventional control methods, such as the use of pesticides, have proven ineffective in combating the mealybugs that spread the virus. Consequently, many farmers have resorted to more drastic measures, such as cutting down infected trees or planting disease-resistant varieties. Despite these efforts, the virus continues to spread, representing an ongoing challenge for the cocoa industry.

A Scientific Solution: Tree Spacing
A promising solution comes from science: Professor Benito Chen-Charpentier and his team at the University of Texas at Arlington have developed a strategy based on mathematical models. This approach helps farmers determine the optimal distance between vaccinated and unvaccinated trees to reduce the spread of mealybugs.

“Mealybugs move in various ways—from canopy to canopy, being carried by ants, or even blown by the wind,” explains Chen-Charpentier. By planting vaccinated trees at strategic distances, a barrier can be created to reduce the risk of virus transmission. These models offer farmers valuable tools to protect their crops and manage operational costs more effectively.

Rising Costs and Economic Challenges
Although vaccinating cocoa trees presents a viable solution, it also introduces significant financial challenges, particularly for small-scale farmers already operating on thin margins. The vaccines are expensive, and vaccinated trees tend to produce lower yields, exacerbating the economic strain. This financial burden is further compounded by the volatility in global cocoa prices, which hit around 6,791 USD per metric ton by August 2024, after peaking at nearly 9,865 USDearlier in the year. Reduced production, driven by CSSV and strong global demand, continues to put upward pressure on prices.

For businesses that process and resell cocoa in bulk, these market conditions pose significant challenges. The rising costs and potential supply shortages create financial strain, forcing companies to adjust their strategies. If the virus continues to spread at its current rate, the long-term availability and quality of cocoa could be at risk.

Died cocoa fruit

Latin America: A Fragile Balance
While CSSV has so far been confined to West Africa, there is growing concern about the potential for the virus to spread to Latin America, another crucial region for cocoa production. Countries like Ecuador and Brazil are major cocoa exporters, and an outbreak in these areas could have devastating consequences for global supply chains. Although the virus has not been detected in Latin America, the interconnected nature of global trade and agriculture poses certain risks.

Theoretical channels through which CSSV could spread to Latin America include:

• Infected Plant Material: Contaminated seeds or seedlings from affected regions.
• Movement of Agricultural Equipment: Tools or machinery used in West Africa that may carry the virus.
• Human Activity: Traveling workers moving between infected and uninfected regions.

While these risks exist, it’s important to note that there are currently no confirmed cases of CSSV in Latin America. Furthermore, while CSSV remains a persistent threat in West Africa, the factors that have prevented its spread to Latin America over the past decades remain largely in place. Stricter quarantine measures and lower prevalence of the mealybug vectors in this region may continue to serve as barriers to the virus.

Securing the Future of Cocoa: What Needs to Be Done
Given these alarming developments, it is essential for both local and international actors in the cocoa industry to take proactive steps to mitigate the impact of CSSV. Investment in research to develop resistant cocoa varieties and effective vaccination programs is critical to stabilizing cocoa yields and ensuring the long-term availability of this essential crop.

For companies relying on cocoa imports, planning ahead and maintaining flexibility in supply chains will be crucial. Strong partnerships with producers and proactive management will be essential to ensuring a stable and reliable supply of high-quality cocoa.

At Bohnkaf, we are committed to supporting these efforts. Through close cooperation with producers and ongoing supply chain optimization, we strive to guarantee the reliable delivery of premium cocoa to our clients, even in the face of industry challenges.

The global cocoa industry is facing a serious crisis.
